Opening post

We were probably always going to have to score 180 to win. We'll probably be doing well to lose by less than 40. At least the game plan won't need to be complicated.

We may just see three spinners next match.

Atrocious fielding. Cremer bowled very well except his last two balls. Vitori cracked 142 kmph. Not much else to talk about. Hopefully the batting is respectable.

Jarvis, Utseya and particularly Cremer were all decent with the ball. Badly let down by the fielding though...

Hindsight, Price must have played. At least after realizing that spinners are difficult to get away, Waller should have got a few overs. Our even Hamilton. Anyway, this is not looking good...

But how can we concede 182 without SL doing anything special? We didn't use the swing early on, we dropped catches, and we only got 4 wickets. Not good enough. Not at all. Now it's up to Vusi, Hami and Taylor, that's it. We are indeed minnows. :(

Well, a foundation has been laid.

Looks like a familiar script from here on: Cremer and Prosper will take us to around 125.

Elton gets promoted which at least shows intent, if nothing else.

Fieding: enough said. Shocking. Not backing up the bowlers at all.

Bowling: Jarvis bowled well up front. Both he and Vitori were unlucky not to take a wicket in the first four overs. But with no answers at the death (where was Muzhange?). Utseya bowled well enough, and Cremer was brilliant (as someone mentioned, why was Waller not asked to turn his arm over, or Hami?). Mpofu is very much a confidence bowler imo, Waller dropped a sitter off him second ball, Dilshan scooped him third ball, and that was it. Again, not backing up your bowlers (but of course two balls should not rock the confidence of an international bowler -- Cremer just kept strutting his stuff after that no-ball). Overall a decent performance, SL should not have gotten more than 160. But one must not forget that SL have some battings greats in their team -- the way Sangakarra bisected the field almost at will, using the big outfield to perfection, manouvering the ball around, was a sight to behold and a lesson to our batsmen: Placement and finesse have a place in T20 cricket.

Batting: Bowlers like Mendis or the recent Windies sensation Narine are never easy to handle when you haven't faced them often. Other international teams finally get to grips with these players because they play them in those endless 5-7 match ODI series, Zim obviously does not feature in said series. Coaching and watching tapes is not the same as facing those guys out there where it matters. I remember when the Aussies first faced Mendis they were utterly clueless despite meticoulus preparation and talk of "we know what to expect". Next series they had really worked him out.

3) Batsmen, FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS GREAT, STOP PLAYING ACROSS THE LINE. PLAY WITH A STRAIGHT BAT. All our batsmen have a habit of playing across the line. They trying to create something from nothing and they all go out. Stupid shot choices and a fear of not getting out rather than playing their shots. Ive said this for years and years and it needs to change.

Totally agree.

As others have mentioned there is a mental element as well. A few years ago our batters where visibly afraid of any pacer clocking 140+. That is something which has changed for the better, Hami giving Malinga the charge was a prime example. Facing spinners there where certain indications in the home series' against Bangladesh and NZ that our batters are not afraid anymore of "ordinary" spinners like Razzak or Patel. But throw in an element of "mystery" or unorthodoxy and the confidence is quickly gone. Yesterday we treated the lesser Mendis like Shane Warne, the same happened when teh boys were so afraid of Ajmal that they treted Hafeez like Murali and got out to his non-turning offies.

Sorry for the long post ;)

I truly hope the players read this thread, we are not bashing anyone but it becomes so hard to stand behind players who don't learn. Look at the bowling: Jarvis, Vitori have gotten better, yet they were nowhere 3 years ago. However, look at the veterans: mid order collapses are still common; only Hami, Taylor and Vusi have consistently stood up to international bowling in the past 3 years. I would rather we forget "big" names that don't consistently deliver. Take Chigs out, put the U-19 Lake in, at least he showed some bottle when the cameras were on. Mpofu is an earnest, experienced hard worker who will never improve past his current level - not good enough. I'd rather have Chatara, Shingi and Querl sniffing around - guys with an upward learning curve still to come. Taylor is not Dhoni, there's too much pressure on the lad, give the gloves to someone else, someone who can hold and improve his place in the side (no, not Matsi). I'm not advocating a team of inexperienced lads, guys like Price and Hami with international class experience are useful. Guys like Prosper/Chigs with experience but incapable of stepping to the next level, should make way for more promising youngsters. That's the simple truth.

Fair analysis foreignfield, and yes, Anusha has some good points here too, http://zimcricketforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=4597

Anybody could make out that it was difficult to score freely against the slower bowlers. Not using Hamilton was a sin. Preferring Utseya ahead of Price was not such a good decision especially against SL. Now, what might happen is, they might play Price against SA, and they might tonk him all over the ground. They have seen a lot of Price and know about his mental toughness and approach as well. But clearly, he would have intimidated the Lankans and they would have respected him a lot more. Utseya did not bowl anything special, he just got away because they were taking it a bit easy during that period. Yes, Jarvis and Vitori bowled very well in the first spell, and Cremer was class.

Sanga's was a masterclass. Hopefully our batters would have learnt a lot by watching him bat. Was great to see Hamilton's approach but did not watch the later humiliation, so can't comment on the rest of the batting.

Can we manage a respectful defeat in the next one please?

Also got to feel that we have been hard done. 2 games in 3 days when some teams have not even played 1, surely we should get a bit bigger break.

Looking at the fixtures it's clear they wanted to get Zim and Afghanistan done with as quick as possible. Would be nice to upset the ICC big-wigs, but I think Afghanistan are more likely to against England than us today.
ZCF OriginalZCF Hall of Famer
I don't have a problem with the schedule. 2 games in 2 days would be a bit rough, but 2 in 3 is fine. If we lose, better to get out of there quick.

Once Zimbabwe and Afghanistan are eliminated the real tournament can begin I guess.

There is a certain solance in the thought that other teams are just as crap against spin. We actually managed 20 runs more than England today 😂

Our failures have been matched by other small and sometimes large teams.
