Opening post

The topic has been discussed at length in the match thread and previously as well, just thought to streamline it here.

Pretty sure all of us are worried that we might end up with another Sibanda or Matsikenyeri

But as Andy had given his stats post the doping ban, he has done decent.

So what should it be - drop Wes? Or keep him going with not many of his profile going around?

He’s a good player. He’s been messed around batting everywhere like Moeen Ali was for England. He’s not a t20 player. ZC are so desperate for him to play they select him when he’s out of form and try and shoehorn him into the t20 side.

Think last time he was dropped and went back to domestic he scored like three tons or something. Made that ton on the recent A team tour to bangers.

If zolsks is invested in you then objectivity is out the window. Scorecards say you’ve done poor, somehow that’s escalated to racism when you call it out.

Being endorsed by Zolks or Coltart is a PR disaster.

This. When he hit a rough patch he was moved all over the batting order, getting his head messed up.

I remember even Ervine facing a similar situation, but he managed to step up. Wessy needs to do the same too now, and he's 26, so I reckon we can see some maturity from him.

Wes has talent, but even the most talented youngsters sometimes need a break when their form is suffering. These "favourites" end up getting harmed when people in high places demand they be selected regardless of form.

This is so true.

What is Wes' best batting position? I reckon 5 in both tests and ODI.

Since the 40 year olds are sticking around till the world cup, and with Williams likely to come back, number 6 is probably the highest he will bat for now.

Well after that latest fiasco, would Wez still warrant a place in the side?

Good player, but the temperament is seriously lacking

Jonathan Campbell might be knocking at the door though

Jono Campbell is an ok player, but I am not convinced he is that much better than Wes. I guess the only to find out is to give him a run in the side. It also doesn't help that he doesn't have a List A century to his name. Oh wait... neither does Wes Confused cricket-ball face

Oh well...

I wouldn't drop him yet. He's obviously not doing enough to completely convince everyone, but I also don't think Zimbabwe have the luxury of throwing away a player who has shown some decent numbers since the ban.

The bigger issue for me is whether there is actually someone better waiting to take his place. If there was a younger player consistently performing domestically, I'd be more open to moving on from Wes. But dropping him just for the sake of dropping him doesn't really solve anything.

I'd give him a proper run for a few more series and see if he can turn those decent performances into something more consistent. If he's still averaging mediocre scores after that, then I think the selectors have to start looking elsewhere. The Sibanda/Matsikenyeri comparisons are understandable, but I'd rather judge him on what he's doing now than assume he'll follow the same path.

Hard not to compare to Sibanda/Matsikenyeri and don't forget Malcolm Waller. He's clearly good enough/too good for domestic cricket but can't translate those performances to international level. It has surely become a big mental block and will be difficult to fix.

We also need to remain cognisant of the role he is being asked to play. Batting allrounder at number 7 in a white ball team is very tough gig.

Almost no opportunity to make really big scores, and frequently asked to play a high risk role, that will inevitably lead to a lot of cheap dismissals. It is wildly difficult to have a strong record in this role, especially compared to those batting in the top 5.

Anyone putting up strong numbers in List A cricket will be doing so in an entirely different role. So it is very tough to say with any confidence that Campbell, Shumba, or anyone else would do significantly better.

What we can probably say is that Wes (and probably Burl) are being eyed for more attractive slots once Taylor, Ervine and Raza have moved on. Given that they are fairly experienced, field well and offer some part time spin, this is probably a reasonable option.

His close to needing to be rested.

That ball did keep very low, which was stiff.

He will essentially bowl Razas overs once he retires. He should be picked for his batting but Wes is so under utilised for his bowling.

He has always done well at 5, then to slot BT in Ervine has dropped down a spot, and Raza refuses to bat outside the top 6.

Ideally he is a 5 or 6 and Raza has enough experience to bat at 7, I dont know why he refuses to go lower than 6.

And BT... Im still not so hot having him in the lineup, that only means Bennett cant go down to 4, Matt Campbell cant come in the squad, and Maru continues to stay out.

He’s a precious guy 😂 won’t bowl in the power play. Won’t bat higher than 5 or lower than 6 😂😂 would rather send a young and green lad like Tsiga out before him. Self proclaimed finisher tag but won’t bat low enough to finish 💁🏻‍♂️🤔

Except when the IPL draft is round the corner then he opens the batting and bowling and keeps wicket to himself 😂😂

Thought you were on about Wes for a sec there 😂
Yes it defeats the purpose of having uncs in the middle order, if they themselves get stymied in the innings.
The point is the young guys get in, get stuck, then they should come in and pump the innings not the other way round as it's happening now
